4k60Hz HDR Hyperion Setup

  • Hi guys, I've created this thread already on the Hyperion Hardware discussion subforum, but I figured my question is more fitting here, so here it goes:

I am very interested to build my own ambilight setup but I couldn't really gather enough information for what I was trying to do.
Essentially, I'd like my setup to work with any HDMI signal and as stated in the title, I want to have full 4K 60Hz HDR experience on compatible devices (e.g. Watching Netflix with an Xbox One S).

So far I've gathered the following parts list:

    - 4K HDMI, HDR compatible Splitter (https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/VOXL...-HDR-Splitter-Extender-1X2-1-in-2/32694337706.

    - APA 102 led strips + power supply

    - Video grabber (utv007 chipset)

    - Raspberry Pi 3 + power supply

As you can see I'm still missing a 4K to RCA signal converter/downscaler.
The only one I could find is the super expensive HDfury Linker (http://hdfury.com/product/linker-4k60-444-600mhz-scaler/) but I am not ready to spent that money on a signal converter.
Are there any other options to get my setup to work? Would it work, if I would buy 2 separate signal converters, 4K -> 1080P and 1080P -> RCA?

Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Hello,
I've been fiddling with a setup myself, and naturally i'm at the same crossroads. My friend uses this one:

He says it works for 4k/30hz at least, i have tested another one from "Xftimes" can find it on ebay and amazon and the likes, not really any good sucess with it.
Also finding a good splitter is an issue, i've tested a couple. Problem with ali express stuff is that its usually hmdi 1.4 and not 4k compatible

I guess the route with the 4k->1080 converter and then 1080 to RCA is the simplest, you wouldnt really lose anything since the grabber itself has so low resolution anyways. Also there are problems if you use refresh rate changer in kodi for example. If you are like me and obsessed with stutter free playback :)

Also we are testing with this switch at the moment, jury is still out on it.

  • Hello @sl81! Do you know a cheap downscaler for 4K -> 1080p?

I finally wrote my own Windows grabber that supports 4K @ 60 Hz that uses DirectX 11 to capture the screen.
