XXL setup RPi4 APA102 ambilight

  • Hi,

first of all, as a beginner, I want to thank all members here for all posts and information I needed and used, to make my XXL setup on my TV wall running.

    • Amplifier Onkyo TX-SR393
    • RPi4 with LibreELEC 9.2.3
    • Argon One case for RPi4
    • Arduino UNO Rev.3
    • about 8m APA102 236 LEDs (30leds/m)
    • MeanWell RSP- 100-5 power supply 100W 20A
    • 4K hdmi splitter with downscaler to 1080p
    • Gana, HDMI to AV converter 1080p
    • LogiLink Audio und Video Grabber USB 2.0

    • Hyperion NG V2.0.0 alpha.6

As a beginner it was very difficult for me and took 4 days to make my setup running.

The led stripes were connected by soldering, the power supply were connected to the beginning, to the middle and to the end of the 4 connected stripes.

The arduino adalight sketch is easy to find, but difficult for me to configure to my personal setup.

Nothing happened when I tested my setup with hypercon or hypercon.LE. I don’t know why... ‍

So I tried Hyperion NG and my setup was running!

But the very last LED didn’t work. Then I figured out to change the numbers of LEDs to 237 in the arduino sketch (although I have 236 LEDs).

This is the result and I am very happy and proud!

  • Does this also work with HDR?

  • Maybe not the right thread for this question, but what happens when you attempt to send an HDR signal through Hyperion to your LEDs? Are the colors just off a bit? Or does it not work at all?

  • I'm not very technical 4K HDR and output two is 1080p SDR, but visually I like the work of my ambilight. And I have no green on a black background. Soon I will post a video, and you yourself will decide whether it shows the color correctly or not.

  • Hello! And again, as promised, I am attaching a video with my Ambilight. Not very bright, because the wall is dark gray. But I even like that it is not brighter than TV. Realizing that every detail is important in the assembly, which affects the final result. Here are my build details.

There are slight speed delays. I think it has something to do with MicroSD on Raspberry. I will buy it more quickly and everything will be fine.

  • @Albert Street
I have to correct my answer. Just tried again with setting my Apple TV 4K to hdr output.
My ambilight does work, but colors washed out, especially red colors as mentioned in the other thread.

    @AdReD
Nice setup. Looks great. But it’s hard to see if your colors are washed out with those fast fluid effects.

Here are pictures to see the difference, when I set my Apple TV to HDR output or SDR output.

  • @Allen B.
Please give me a link to the video that you want to test. I'll shoot a video again.

  • Hello! I shot a video of the test. All colors seem to display correctly. And some more videos from Netflix. I am very pleased with the result. Thanks to the developers Hyperion.ng.
