How do you shut down a pie? Shutdown now = denied?

As in title, how do I shut down? I'm having to literally pull the plug on my pi.

sudo shutdown now I'm guessing, sorry. Early days.

i put it in Hybernation/sleep, input GPIO3 activated > a power down script > PI hybernates and activates on GPIO3
