New to Hyperion need help with hardware.

  • Hello, can someone help me choose the hardware i need for running hyperion. I have a 65 inch Samsung smart TV, also i have the LED Strip (ws2812b/60led per meter) and a 10A power supply. I have a Raspberry Pi 4 with 8gb memory. After all the reading of guides for hyperion i'm a bit confused and i have a bunch of questions.

Do i need a ESP controller for the strips or can i just use the raspberry 4 ?

What kind of capture card do i need there are a lot of them and i dont know from which i can get the best performance.

The only hdmi devices i have is a TV box from my local cable tv provider, from which i can also watch movies and tv shows.

Does hyperion capture my smart TVs integrated apps for example Youtube, Netflix ect.

Do i need a hdmi splitter for something ?

Does it capture the full 4k video stream from the tv though the capture card on to hyperion?

    1. no you can just use the GPIO18 / PWM0, have to run hyperion under root for that and switch off audio in config.txt
    2. Look for Rullz loop usb device
    3. You need a hdmi splitter for that, if watching drm content like Disney/Amazon/HBO etc , don't forget purchasing a HDCP compliant one
    4. Smart tv's come with build in OS, with Samsung you can't with LG you can in some cases..
    5. See point 3 , yes you need that anyway. Integrated apps you can't capture on Samsung (I have Samsung TV myself so..)
    6. You don't need 4k going into Hyperion, 720p is sufficient. You can achieve with downscaling from 4k to 1080p with a good splitter/downscaler and then capture only 720p out of that signal.

note: for splitting drm content you need at least HDCP2.2 build in the splitter, if it isn't it will go black on you or in Netflix/Disney give you HDCP warning and no playback.

It's to protector to them you can't copy the material online streaming

    Goodluck!

  • Hey i finished my setup and i can recommend you a few things.

    1. Splitter: I had 3 different Splitters (noname,Feintech and ezcoo) and the best one was the for me. I set EDID to 4k and OUT 1 to Pass and OUT 2 to 1080P

    2. HDMI to USB Capture card: Newhope from

with this setup iam capable of watching Netflix Dolby Vision Content via FireTV stick and both the Stream and the Ambilight works fine for me
