Hyperion + HyperSerialPico + SN74AHCT125N + SK6812 RGBW DC12V

  • Hello..

    I am building new Hyperion (HyperHDR) + HyperSerialPico + SN74AHCT125N + SK6812 RGBW DC12V for 55" TV..

    Is my wiring diagram correct?

  • Hi!

I'm running a nearly identical setup and I would say you're on the right track but the main difference is that my whole setup is 5V which makes powering everything simpler. Is there a particular reason for the 12V LEDs? For a 55" tv, a 5V SK6812RGBW strip powered at both ends will be fine - my setup is around a 125" projector screen with four power injections and it works great, no issues with voltage drop.

This will allow you to use one 5V power supply for everything (calculate your needed amperage of course) so you can more easily ensure common ground between all devices - with a single 5V power supply, I would also add a ground between the PICO and the rPi. I'm not an electrical expert so I don't know if a common ground between 5V and 12V power supplies is safe, or a good idea.

Also, SK6812RGBW can be very troublesome to get working properly so anything you can do to simplify the setup is probably a good idea.

If you have any other questions I'll try answer best I can.

Adding a couple photos of my wiring in case it helps:

  • I have chosen 12V led strip to not have 5V/20A power source but just 12V/10A which I already have from old laptop..

RPi 5 is already running Home Assistant and it is powered by original Raspberry power source..

sharing GND between 5V and 12V should be safe as I know..

Most 12v SK6812 RGBW have the disadvantage that 3 LEDs form a group.

    For a 55' TV, 5V with 10 A is sufficient.

  • Thank you for pointing our 3 LEDs in group..

this LED strip seems to have individual LEDs controlled..

but in the description it says:

    IC Type : SK6812

LED/per meter:60leds/Meter (each LED is separately controlled)

IC introduction: DC12V:1 IC drives 3 led chip

so I am little bit confused if 1 LED can be controlled or group of 3 LEDs..

Specification confusing, both versions are visible in the pictures.

    Quote from Specification:

60leds/Meter (each LED is separately controlled)

    DC12V: 1 IC drives 3 led chip

The 12V SK6812 RGBW from zedfy are verified.

    regards pclin
