Which USB grabber for 4K resolutions on a raspberry pi?

  • I recently upgraded my splitter to a VSP01222 to be able to watch 4k with HDR on my TV. Unfortunately, the upgrade had the side effect that hyperion does not work on 4k resolutions, anymore. (Previous splitter down-scaled everything to 1080p).

    4K and HDR work fine on the TV. The grabber, a cheap USB 2.0 HDMI dongle with 534d:2109 MacroSilicon chip, onlys work with up to 1080p 60Hz. I had hoped that the scaler in the VSP01222 solved the issue.

    Which grabber is recommended in this case?

    Current setup is:

    raspberry CM4 2GB on a waveshare base board with libreelec -> VSP01222 HDMI 1 port (set to copy EDID)-> TV

    and

    VSP01222 HDMI 2 -> USB grabber -> 2.0 port on base board.

  • To answer the question myself:

    A MS2130-based grabber, USB id 345f:2130, works on the USB 2.0 port with 4K and HDR.

    • Official Post

    Due most MS2130 can do max. 4K 30HZ at input, so it works because the splitter scaled to 1080p 60 Hz.

    Without a scaler, only 4K 30 Hz will arrive at both devices.

    HDR comes on the TV, the splitter cannot do HDR to SDR tonemapping.

    Colors have to be compensated for the grabber/Ambilight.

    With DolbyVision, there will be no picture on TV and grabber.
