Need help with HDMI 2.1 setup

  • Hey there,

    this is the third time I'm giving this project a try.

    So here's my current Setup:

    TV: HDMI 2.1 77" OLED with eARC

    AVR: Onkyo NR-6100 (2x HDMI Output, 6x HDMI Input)

    Currently, I have every Device connected the one of the inputs of my AVR. That should stay like that. (PC, Streaming Box, PS5, Switch, other PC, Laptop)

    My TV is connected to the eARC HDMI 2.1 Output 1.

    Meaning I have a "spare" HDMI 2.1 Output in my AVR.

    My plan was to use that second output for a Hyperion Grabber.

    Here's the problem.

    Onkyo has a limitation, where the both outputs are limited to the highest common resolution / framerate.

    Which HDMI 2.1 grabber could I use? Should I use a 2.1 HDMI Splitter with an EDID Emulator and some sorts of downscaling?

    I'm kinda at a loss. ;(

    my man.

    splitting a source with a receiver mostly doesn't work. you need a EDID and HDCP capable splitter/scaler for that, if it ain't working

    just order a Xolorspace 61121 for instance and connect main HDMI output from receiver at input splitter/scaler.

    then split 4K to tv and 1080p to the Raspi

  • just order a Xolorspace 61121 for instance and connect main HDMI output from receiver at input splitter/scaler.

    The Xolorspace 61121 is a HDMI 2.0 device.
    I'll lose 4k120, VRR, and more. That is not an option.

    My goal was to keep all HDMI 2.1 features.

    I've ordered a couple of things to try out:

    AV-Receiver Output 2 -> FeinTech SP210 HDMI 2.1 Splitter Input

    SP210 Output 1 -> HDMI 2.1 EDID Dummy Plug 4k120

    SP210 Output 2 -> 1080p120 USB Capture Card

    According to the documentation the SP210 is able to downscale the 4k Signal to 1080p and even convert HDR to SDR.
    We'll see if that works once everything arrives.

    If it doesn't work, I guess I have to buy an expesive HDMI 2.1 capture card.

    FeinTech SP210 is not a good choice.

    Downscale only automatically.

    DolbyVision cannot be scaled, no picture on TV and for Ambilight.

    No frame rate conversion, Conventional grabbers can only handle 60 Hz.

    No HDR to SDR tone mapping.

    Without an HDMI 2.1 grabber, you won't have any success. If you use the board search, you'll find threads where this has already been discussed, but so far, there has been no successful response.

    And forget the 2 HDMI output on the AVR.

    Ambilight for ever

  • Heya!

    I've managed to get it to work, kinda.

    The SP210 works great. Downscaling to 1080p on the second output works like a charm, I plugged a dummy EDID into Output 1. All with the second output of the AVR.

    If I attach my Laptop to the capture card I see the image in OBS, so far so good, everything works great.

    Now when I attach this capture card to the raspberrypi I see no Live Video. Nothings, It's just blank. Upon changing some settings I see the live video output green for a short time, than blank again.

    Any suggestions?

    Nevermind, everything works like a charm, lmao.

    I just had to adjust the hardware settings to 50, instead of the 0 that was already in there by default. (Bug? Feature?)

    So yeah. I can highly recommend the connecting the SP210 to the second output of the AVR. Dummy EDID on output 1 of the splitter and capturecard on output 2. :)

    DV still works, HDR still works, VRR still works, ALLM still works.

  • thatswhy i said it MOSTLY will not work. In some cases (depends on setup and AVR) it will

    there's always the exemption that will prove a point.

    btw, I am really curious what will happen over time with the HDCP 2.1 protocol because you are using different HDMI ports to split.

    let's see.

    ambilight ftw 🙌

    EDID and HDCP trough a receiver can be a nightmare.

    hope with you it ain't 🙌
