Only pink/green image capture with MS2130 capture device

  • I ordered this capture card recently https://www.amazon.de/dp/B08Z3XDYQ7?tag=hyperioforum-21 to replace my old fullHD setup with a 4k compatible one. It has a MS2130 chip as they mentioned on the product page.

    The chain is the following:

    Apple TV4k -> Denon xhr1800 -> feintech VSP01201 Out 1-> TV

    Out 2 -> MS2130 Video Grabber -> Hypercon (Hyperion) -> LEDs

In usual SDR / FullHD content everything seems to work fine, but in any of netflix or amazon (4k) content, the video input turns pink/green, which messes up the led colors.

The EDID mode of the Feintech is in "TV". When i switch it to "STD" it works again with any content, but the TV then only receives FullHD which makes the whole setup obsolete.

By the way, I dont get this STD/TV mode at all ... following the description of the feintech support page it should also work with 4k in STD mode on output 1, if it supports it, but that might be another story ...

I am aware, that no dolby vision nor HDR content ist working with the hyperion project, but "usual" 4k TV should work, or doesnt it? What i am doing wrong?

Might it be, that the MS2130 video grabber is not capable of it? What else can i try?

    Thanks

  • Hmm I tested with the capture device on my macbook and there its the same purple/green oversaturated colors. So I think its a matter of the capture device.

I think it has to do with the resolution at all, so my device before was just an analog capture box with much less resolution ... since the new device accepts 4k, the splitter will not downscale to any less resolution automatically. Doing it via EDID mode = "STD", any of the devices are in fullhd, which is also not wanted ...

Might it be better to just look for a "FullHD" capapble capture device to force the downscaler automatically to max FullHD?

On the other side, i dont know why the MS2130 is recommended if they dont work with 4k resolutions

Most MS2130 video grabbers can do 4K 30 Hz on the input so if your TV and source can/deliver 4k 60Hz the splitter will scale to 1080 for the grabber.

MS2130 only makes sense with USB 3.0 and a powerful device,

MS2109 and MS2130 are good grabbers for little money and are installed in many devices, even much more expensive ones.

Pink/Green is an incompatible input signal at the splitter, usually Dolby Vision. There are no scalers that can process this.

Unfortunately, with the FeinTech VSP01201 you cannot switch off the scaler.

Hyperion requires a resolution that matches your LED 'resolution'. A higher resolution only puts a strain on the system Hyperion is running on.

  • I the meanwhile i found out, that my "old" ezcoo 4k splitter is doing it very well with the new grabber ... i replaced it only because it cannot handle CEC which is absolutely dumb in my eyes, since its just connecting an additional pin ... so i have a ezcoo splitter which can also handle dolby vision / and even hdr (yes, really! The image is a bit darker overall which is ok, since its at least not pink but a bit less intensive) and i have the CEC compatible Feintech which cannot handle any 4k signal for the second output ...

Soldering in general might not be a problem but not in this micro scaling ... its pathetic ... but i dont wanna buy another splitter ...

Maybe i switch just to a fixed background light, its very exhausting at the moment^^

You don't need to solder inside thesplitter for CEC. There are HDMI connectors/sockets that you plug into the IN and OUT ports, and you can easily connect pin 13 (CEC) through them. I'm not entirely sure, but I think there's a user thread with pictures, but it could have been on a different board.

Yes, that should work, it looked similar to the user who posted it.

It works also without soldering, a jumper cable is enough for CEC.

    From the Ezcoo manual

DO NOT Down-scaler Refresh rate and Dolby Vision. Pls TURN OFF Scaler when play 4K HDR Dolby Vision

  • If i do not downscale, i have similar effects like with the FeinTech splitter ... everything is pink etc. ... i think this was exact the issue for the FeinTech. The automatical downscaler did not kick in for my new grabber since it supports the 4k stuff ... if i have the downscaler on for output2 (grabber) on the ezcoo, everything works like a charm! Yes, the HDR/dolby vision is darker than the usual tv stuff, but in this case i like the decent ambient bringing the focus more on the dynamic picture instead.

If the CEC solution will work in addition, this is a nearly perfect solution for me ... the only thing i can imagine to be improved is the possibility of ARC ... but honestly ... i can't imagine a use case for now bringing the internal sound of the tv to the AV Receiver somehow ...

What do you mean by this? I have it run on an old raspberry pi 3b+ with no usb 3.0, but it works anyway ... do you think it might consume too much power over time and might "overheat" ?

if anyone is interested in the setup, i can post current one.

MS2130 also works on USB 2.0, but it doesn’t offer any significant advantages over the MS2109.

The best grabbers for 4k Setup are those with 4K 60 Hz at the input, for example, the affordable (10 €) MS2109 from Berrybase.

No scaler or grabber can handle DolbyVision.

Only a few scalers can do HDR to SDR tone mapping. HDR colors and brightness can be compensated in Hyperion, but there is no automation that takes over the switching on its own.

  • Okay, the suggested HDMI PCB Boards finally arrived, but as far as i connect them between my current HDMI connections i again get dropouts of the signal every few seconds/minutes ... its the same as i had before with a broken socket of my housing ...

But if i remove for example the HDMI sockets ( the are just for pass the signal from the outside to the inside of my lightberry housing) from the chain and connect it directly to the PCB adapter its working fine again. But also without the PCB connector and only connect it to the housings pass-through sockets in the chain its working fine ... but both together does not seem to work somehow.

    The non working chain is:

HDMI Cable Signal In (male) -> HDMI Pass through socket (female->female) -> 15cm HDMI cable (male/male) -> HDMI PCB Board (female/male) -> Splitter Signal In (Female)

The working ones (but not sufficient for use case):

HDMI Cable Signal In (male) -> HDMI Pass through socket (female->female) -> 15cm HDMI cable (male/male) -> Splitter Signal In (Female)

    or

HDMI Cable Signal In (male) -> HDMI PCB Board (female/male) -> Splitter Signal In (Female)

I also replaced the hdmi cables with no luck.

I fear that HDMI doesn't like much transitions at all, so if you put adapter to adapter, at some point the signal is really unstable.

Its sooo annoying, since it feels like failing at 98% reached goal :/

With each connection, signal quality/strength decreases, so cables should be as short and high-quality as possible. In practice, however, two connections are no problem, and the Ezcoo Scaler refreshes the signal, allowing for longer cables and connectors.

  • There are 1,5m + 0,25 + 0,25 + 4m = 6m HDMI in total where the last 4m are "repeated" from the HDMI splitter ... and yes the contact resistance for the terminals and HDMI PCB Boards

The fact that this occurs just after a while might also indicate a temperature issue ... so yesterday everything was fine for 30minutes and suddenly starts with blackscreen dropouts ...

I connected now the input and output HDMI cables from the AV Receiver/TV directly to the splitter and dont expierienced any droputs for hours, but yes ... i don't have cec with this ...

Is it possible, that after a while the devices starting communication via cec and therefore "negotiating" signals leading to this droputs?

    How to troubleshoot this?
