Live Video in Hyperion NOT WORKING - Black Screen

  • Hi,

    I’m trying to set up Hyperion on my Raspberry Pi 4 (HyperBian)

    My setup is:

    The grabber works fine when connected to my PC with OBS, but inside Hyperion the live video preview remains black.

    From the log I can see that:

    • The V4L2 grabber is detected as /dev/video0 ("USB Video: USB Video").

    • It initializes correctly at 640x480, 30fps, YUYV format.

    • Hyperion reports V4L2 started and the grabber is enabled.

    • However, the video feed never shows up in the web interface (only a black preview).

    I already tried:

    • Switching pixel format (MJPEG / YUYV)

    • Different resolutions (640x480, 1280x720)

    • With and without the HDMI splitter

    None of these made the video appear inside Hyperion.

    👉 I’m attaching the full Hyperion System Summary Report + logs below for reference.

    Does anyone have an idea why the grabber initializes but the video stream is not visible in Hyperion (So I assume no LEDs will light up if all the pixels are black)?

    Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hyperion 2.1.1 unfortunately has problems with USB grabber, 2.0.16 works.

  • Hi, thank you for your feedback!

    I’ve installed Hyperion version 2.0.16, but the Live Video Preview is still black.

    For testing, I’m currently using a Nintendo Switch, connected to the splitter that goes to an old flat TV and the grabber on the raspberry (i'll be using a Marantz AV receiver in the final set up).

    The TV receives the signal correctly through the splitter, so I assume the issue is related either to the grabber itself or how the Raspberry Pi detects it.

    I’m not sure if this could be related to HDCP, but even when I connect my PC to the grabber, the Live Video Preview in Hyperion doesn’t seem to work.

    I’ll attach the log again.

    Sorry if these are basic questions — I’m still quite new to all this.

    Remnants of 2.1.1 are still available

    Code: log
      "general": {
        "configVersion": "2.1.1",

    The hardware values of the grabber are not correct, you can try to adjust

    Code: log
        "hardware_brightness": 0,
        "hardware_contrast": 0,
        "hardware_hue": 0,
        "hardware_saturation": 0,

    Do you need the Flatbuffer server?

    Is there a github issue for this? I did not find one last I looked.

    • Official Post

    Yes, it is known.

    Did you adjust the hardware values as described in code 2?

    Brightness = 0 is black.

    Why 2.0.16?

    Black Screen

    Hyperion Settings level Expert and check the hardware settings of the grabber.

    Press Default hardware controls

    Correct the values for your grabber

    If you have problems, try the nightly build, attach a complete Hyperion debug log.
