Is this possible?

  • I want to add ambilight around my TV as well as under my TV stand. Is this possible using a Raspberry Pi and Hyperion?

I understand the screenshot I shared; they are using SignalRGB, but I want to use this in my living room, away from my PC.

Yes, this is possible with Raspberry Pi and Hyperion.

Hyperion can run multiple instances, via GPIO and via USB and network external LED controllers.

    Ambilight for ever

  • I figured I could use a dedicated USFF pc with an HDMI input to run Hyperion.

After conducting some testing, I discovered that you can connect Hyperion to Home Assistant. The issue is ever since I connect HA to Hyperion, Hyperion crashes almost instantly after booting.

Any thoughts on what may be causing this?

  • Perfect! I was able to get it to stop crashing using the Nightly Build, thank you.

Is it possible now that I am connected to HA, to sync any other lights (ceiling smart bulbs) to Hyperion to use for ambilight effects?

  • I've seemed to get lights from HA to work with Hyperion. It appears there is some pretty noticeable latency. Any ideas on how to improve this? It would be neat to have the smart bulbs in my ceiling lights to match the top of the TV ambilight.

The HA API is not made for low latency updates. In case you have network lights which are directly supported by Hyperion, always go via the non HA route.

For your lights you might need to check where the latency comes from. Given you are not sharing too much details, it is hard to say.

Latency could happen as Hyperion does requests via a bad Wi-Fi connection.

To sort this out you could enable Debug logging in Hyperion.

There you will then see how long one API request to HA takes.

In case, you issue is more that you do not see frequent updates, you might want to test if reducing the latch time helps.

You should enable expert settings to see the element. You should not reduce the latchtime below the API request time (you checked above). Also include some buffer.

Hoping that this provided you with some pointers.

As every setup is different you need to explored the influencing dimensions.

  • I've decided to now go the route of using a Raspberry Pi, but I am unsure on which one to use. What would you recommend?

  • i have Raspi 3b with 1024 RAM and runs Hyperion.NG 2.016 build with settings on hdmi usb grabber; 720p 25FPS and size decimation on 3.

so anything higher as Raspi 3b is fine You dont need to grab 4k to have nice ledlights, dont be fooled :)
