Changed the title of the thread from “HyperionAndroidReborn - The update to the Hyperion Android Grabber” to “HyperionAndroidReborn - The successor to the Hyperion Android Grabber”. -
so i was testing out the project, and figured out it has a major performance issue with hdr/dolby content, because it causes it to send hyperion tone images back it has a lot of processing, i can not disable that and thsi is the only method to get streamed content there/
just wondered if anyone had any ideas.
thanks -
I updated the app to be compatible with android 14+
aswell it should fully work now with flatbuffers, increasing performance. -
Thanks for the great project.
What kind of TV are you using/testing?
I have an TCL with android 14.
-
Hey sorry for the late response,
I am usingn a TCL C655K, running android 12 and a zfold 3 running android 15
-
Thank you, so I should give it a try

-
it should hopefulyl work, if you encounter any issues let me know i will try fix them, right now im working on hdr support.
-
Are you still working on HDR support?
The classic android grabber works for me(SDR) but it doesn't work on HDR content(except smart tube) for some reason.
edit: After reading the release tab on github, i think you abandoned it. But is there any way that this can work?
-
Oh sorry for the super late response,
the grabber should work fully on HDR content, i have tested on dolby vision, hdr 10+ and hdr 10 content and it all works, it depends though the reason why sometimes it doesnt work is because if oyu try on netflix or something thats DRM protected so the grabber can't grab it.
The reason why i abandoned HDR was because it has insane requirements, for example it requires to send and process 720p, which nearly no smarttv can handle or device, for example i tested it on the firestick and it resulted in around 30-40 frames of just delay.
Let me know what app your using for the content, i have personally tested it on jellyfin and plex and emby, but yeah. -

Do I need to root my television to install the grabber?

hey sory for the late replies everyone
agreen you do not have to root your tv to install the grabber

Edoardo are you using the newest release version? i testedo. my tclc6k which is the same as the tclc6ks well it should be atleast, and it worked fine there.
daszr aswell yeah same message sorry, if you could try and debug the app and get the logs from your tv and then ill implement a fix based around that

if you can just runadb logcat -d | grep -i "com.hyperion.grabber" > hyperion_grabber_log.txt
and let me know the response from the logs i would be happy to help

Hello. The android grabber on my TV can't access hyperion running on my PC. In fact, I can't access Hyperion at all other than on the computer it's running on. [IP address]:8090 doesn't work in the grabber or in a browser on my TV or phone. All the servers on the Network Services page are active, and I haven't changed any of the ports. I can access Kodi running on the same computer on [IP address]:8080 on both my phone and TV. Is there something I'm missing?
-
This is awesome, thanks for refreshing things! It's working great for me at the moment.
Question for you, what apps have you found that are compatible? I'm on Android 14 and my main apps (Plex and Smarttube) both just show up as black unfortunately.

Good job with the grabber! The installation went without any issues.
However, I’ve encountered a few problems:
TCL Q7C: The grabber is unable to control the LEDs based on the screen content. Interestingly, manual control via Hyperion works perfectly fine.
Nvidia Shield TV: It works better here, but the app closes itself after a certain amount of time. This happens much faster when playing 4K content compared to FHD. I suspect this might be a memory management issue.
I’m excited to see how the project evolves, but in its current state, it isn't quite ready for daily use for me.
Best regards,
eMd

ok thank you guys, sorry again for my late response had a lot of school work to do and to be honest playing terraria haha.
anywho
im working on a fix right now and it should be published tonight, i am super sorry for the issues everyone is facing and im working hard to fix it.
eMd and daszr im working hard to fix ur isues right now, personally i havent had issues with 4k content crashing it but i will reduce memory consumption and daszr im trying to fix the tcl watchdog flagging the app currently, hopefully i should be done for some time tonight.
contagon it should work for all apps that dont have drm, for example plex, jellyfin, emby should all work and thats what i tested it on, let me know if oyu have any issues since plex should work, please tell me ur device.
Stophammer this would seem like an issue with ur client you just need to put the ip for the hyperion which should be just the hyperion ip and not any ports with it, hopefully that solves ur issuethe update has been released, hopefully it fixes all your guys issue, im pretty sure tcl might be buggy with it since their watchdog is super strict, but isnt as enabled on my tv apparently???
- Go to Settings > Apps > Hyperion Grabber
- Enable "Auto-start" or "Allow background activity" permission
- Some TCL TVs have this in Settings > Privacy > Special app access > Auto-start
run this please if you have a tcl and then it should work
-
This time app is not crashing but getting this toast : "Screen Recording permission was denied. Please grant permission when prompted"
Already gave permission for display over apps . (Also no option for autostart in tv)
I think it may be OEM is blocking it ?
