Changing the "Backlight" colour on Philips Hue Bridge/bulbs

  • Hi,

Quick question. I've got my Philips bulbs out of storage and noticed there is a handy feature in Hyperion to set "Backlight Threshold" and (seemingly, unless I misunderstand it's purpose) this allows the bulbs to act as normal lights (lamps in my case) when Hyperion is inactive/black screen detection.

This works flawlessly, Hyperion has picked up the bridge and is working the bulbs fine. When the device (Firestick) is powered off or goes into black screen detection, after a second or two the lamps fire up, honouring whatever "Backlight Threshold" is set to.

But it's always cold white. Is there any way to change this to warm white? I've tried changing it via the Philips android app and it doesn't stick, next power cycle of the firestick they come back up as cold white. I'm not sure if this colour is picked/commanded by hyperion as maybe there is some hue setting that I haven't found. Selecting "Coloured backlight" and even changing the temperature of the bulbs doesn't do anything.

I've attached my config but note there's a lot of shittery in there. For some reason my PI5 SPI broke and I've been messing with the config until I found it was the PI itself, not Hyperion, as even the feedback loop doesn't work.

    Thanks!

There is an option in your Hue App which defines how your setup behaves, when Entertainment API stops streaming.

I guess the color comes from there.

Screenshot is in German, but I am confident you will find it in the Hue app.

Lord-Grey that is the HUE setting that overrides only the poweroff colour from on/off with a physical switch from your house . but nothing else.

No, the setting is related to when Entertainment stops.

The next screen allows you setting the behaviour (see 2nd screenshot)

I faced the same challenges as AMJ that lights changed color even if I not configure anything in Hyperion :)

  • Hi,

Yes there are multiple apps. So far as I can see all are published as official Philips Hue apps.

I've no idea why, but it could be related to the fact that Ambilight/Hue division are not actually part of Philips. Or at least certainly not under the same umbrella.

Either way, yes, finding the right app and changing the settings does indeed allow me to pick the colour it defaults to when streaming stops.
