I wanted to share my build to help others. The back of my TV is not flat so I wanted to build a separate frame for my lights. This also make it so I can easily move the lights to a new TV.
Walking around the hardware store I found the perfect solution. A window screen replacement kit! The kit has everything needed to build a strong aluminum frame that you can cut to size with a hacksaw. It is also light weight and inexpensive.
My build uses apa102 LEDs 30/m, video capture as outlined in the tutorials, and a raspberry pi 3.
Frame fully assembled before mounting
Important note: You want to put your lights together first and then measure them to cut the frame. Make the frame match the lights, not the other way around.
Since the LEDs will lay flat on the frame I used corner connectors instead of wires to connect each segment.
After the lights were framed out and the screen kit was cut to size I put it all together. I reinforced the corners of the screen frame with duct tape as the connectors are just plastic and can easily come apart. I then mounted the LEDs to the frame using the adhesive backing.
To mount the frame to the TV I used velcro. The power supply and raspberry pi are located in the tv stand below.
My TV sits in the corner so is not flat against the wall.
