Hey Everyone!
I'm at the final stages of my current install and I'm always thinking of how I could make things better next time. My TV setup uses a single 16ft strip of 5V LEDs. However, my friend has a TV that would need two strips of 16ft LEDs. For his, I am considering suggesting 12V LED strips. But, that got me thinking about the power supply and needing both a 12V source for the LEDs and a 5V source for the Raspberry Pi controller.
Could I use a regular PC power supply for that setup?
I know PC power supplies have both 5V and 12V outputs, are well grounded, and are generally higher quality compared to the typical generic barrel-jack power supplies. I suspect the answer could be one or more of:
- Yes, this is a well-known solution used by many. [see threads/tutorials here]
- No, this is not a good idea for [reasons].
- Why has nobody suggested this before? It's a great idea!
My brain was going and I needed someone to check my sanity here.

I have also heard that adding a capacitor across the LED strip will help with abrupt power changes. Is it actually advisable to install a capacitor for power regulation?

I fixed it.
The ground wire was not connected correctly. Once the ground was in place, colors work!

Thank you for your help!
I've run the command you provided and it greatly improved the results. Now instead of just the first two LEDs lit, most LEDs along the strip are lit. However, they are not responding to output commands from Hyperion (they are not changing colors). The debug output is listed below.
Also, the sudo command you provided is not listed on the documentation page you linked and is not found on the documentation site at all (view results here). Adding this information to the Hypberbian documentation would be very helpful to anyone using GPIO output.

Hey Everyone!
I'm restarting my Hyperion setup from scratch with a fresh install of Hyperbian. However, I'm not getting any output from the GPIO. I've found and tried these commands that are supposed to enable it:
sudo systemctl disable --now hyperion@pi
sudo systemctl enable --now hyperion@root
However, that didn't fix it. I've tried an update and full-upgrade as well. I haven't found anything in the documentation.
What are the correct commands to get the GPIO to respond correctly?

Hey Everyone,
I've previously had Hyperion running, had it disabled for several months (accidentally yanked a light strip wire), and just now getting back to replacing the LEDs. I've done a fresh install of Hyperbian, but the Hyperion service always stays "stopped" for some reason. What could be the issue?
The device is a Pi0 which was working fine previously.

Hey Everyone!
I'm building out a Hyperion installation and wanted to change the output from GPIO pin 18 to GPIO pin 21. Pin 21 is on the bottom corner therefore easier to pick out rather than counting off 6 pins from the other corner.
Are there any specific reasons to use GPIO pin 18 instead of pin 21 on the corner for Hyperion?

I've got my setup 95% ready to go, but I have one last question before final installation. If the system is up and running and I unplug the capture card USB and plug it back in, how do I get Hyperion to re-recognize the capture is there without rebooting the system?

Ya, I'm trying to avoid the red lines in the diagram and asking how to prevent them. I have both the USB-C and USB-A cables connected, but I want to force power through USB-C and prevent power from USB-A. Will cutting the USB-A power leads still allow data to work through USB-A?
The data rate between the capture card and Pi is working fine; it's the HDMI signal to the TV that blinks out every once in a while if the device is not connected in the "correct" order for power allocation. I have a 1080p signal going through the HDMI ports (I got a 4K card for futureproof-ness) and the USB capture setting is set to a minimal widescreen resolution.

I'm still working on getting things set up and I think I might have a power source problem. Here's my rig:

I've wired up a mini USB hub to connect my Pi to the network via ethernet (near the TV is a weak wifi spot) while using the main power supply. However, it seems that sometimes the capture card will pull power from the intended data connection rather than its own dedicated USB power connection. When it does so, the HDCP image will flicker, likely due to intermittent incoming low power.
This also happens if I try connecting directly to the Pi.
If I plug USB connections in using a "correct" order, the system works flawlessly.
Is there a way to force the video capture card to only pull power from its dedicated power source? Can I create a "data only" USB cable by clipping the power lines between the video capture card and the Pi or are the power lines needed for data transfer?
Just checking before I sacrifice another USB cable.

Many times the capture card does not appear to be detected by Hyperion. If I power things off and on, it will eventually catch on and work just fine.
Is this actually a power-on sequence problem? If I unplug and reconnect the USB capture card while the Pi is powered on, should the Pi detect that the card is gone and now returned for normal use by Hyperion? Is there a "rescan USB for capture devices" function in Hyperion that I can manually hit to force-discover the card? What else could be the issue?

I got everything up and running, but there is a 1-to-1.5 second delay between the output video signal and the LED color display (video signal leads). The input source and output are 1080p (I got a 4k card for futureproof-ness). Platform Capture settings are QT 80x45@30Hz, image processing smoothing off, black bar detector on. I've tried the setup on a Pi0 and Pi3 with the same issue. What setting am I missing? (or is it that card blows, sux 2bu)
