The software is very nice, you are smarter than me if you can get it to work.

    My hardware setup:
    1. I have a pi4 with raspOS and apa102 leds connected directly to the pi to it with SPI pins (MOSI 19 and SCLK 23).
    2. I have a windows 10 64bit PC running the Grabber software with 1080p resolution.

    The problem:
Hyperion shows the startup rainbow and changes over to the idle effect, so the the leds and hyperion are working. Grabber says that it is connected Proto on port 19445 but hyperion just keeps showing the idle effect. I tried setting Grabber to DX9 and DX11, no change, hyperion doesnt show the Grabber output. I tried turning on and off Platform Capture in Hyperion, but that didn't change anything.

    Any ideas?

I put my ambilight on ice for now, it was taking away from my tv experience with the distracting colors and the random flashing.
Dont be discouraged though, other ppl seem to have it working well.
I only used OSMC and I think this was the problem. Stick to openelec

Very cool hardware finds. Looks like the splitter and 4k2AV are $63CDN each.
Since the 4k2AV is only 30fps (hdmi 1.4b) I hope your converter is able to pass the 60fps signal without the converter going crazy.
Looking forward to your bleeding edge results!

There is a 65" 4k tv here for $750 CDN at costco for any canadians reading this.

The easycap dc60 doesnt say if it is stk1160 or UTV007. You sure it is a good one?

Wips is so easy and works very well, eliminating the grabber and converter. The only problem is when you run media center in full screen, wips no longer works and your leds go black. The workaround is to run media center in windowed mode and drag the window to become larger than your desktop. Then it works great (I have only tested it at 1080p 60fps).

I started with the stk1160 in osmc and the flashing was more common than when I tried the 007. But like you, the colors are off and in my case they are way off. With the stk1160 the colors were ok after calibration but the Frame Too Small problem along with horizontal green lines in the grabbed frames made a mess. Next step will be to try openelec and hope the drivers are better.

If there was better control of the color calibration that would be helpful. The colors with the 007 were very far off, as I mentioned in a different thread, and calibration doesn't let us shift or replace color ranges.

Nice idea using the led profiles for mounting. Too bad they are expensive to ship. I hope I will have some leftover once I finish my shower tile led installation :)

"i cant imagine watching movies without hyperion setup"
Can you tell me what you are using for your setup? Ive been trying this for a year and still my hyperion setup is too ugly and inconsistent to use even for 1 day. I think it just does not work well with OSMC. Maybe you use openelec?

"I can go down the video capture route"

I doubt that. Last week I looked for a 4k to AV device (similar to the HDMI2AV for 1080p to composite) and there was nothing on aliexpress.

"some of the movies will require hdmi and run at full 60FPS"
60fps at 4k requires hdmi 2.0. It may be some time before devices that can grab from hdmi 2.0 start coming out. You may need to stick with 30fps which wouldnt make a difference with ambilight because of smoothing anyways, but will degrade your tv video quality.

I purchased a UTV007 grabber and here is what I have learned.

    1. The stk1160 was the cause of a bunch of weirdness in OSMC on the rpi (probably a driver issue).
    - random all LED flash every 20-500 seconds
    - the green horizontal lines which cause flickering (see above post's pic)

    2. The UTV007 is plug n play in osmc, as is the STK1160

    3. I cannot use hypercon to take a screenshot with the UTV007 without restarting hyperion.

    4. The UTV007 works stably with OSMC, no more flickering.

    5. The colors captured are different with the UTV007 vs the STK1160. Green looks light blue now (cyan), red still looks good, blue looks like purple (magenta), yellow looks yellow-green.

    Question:
I cannot get the color calibration to work with the skewed colors captured by the UTV007. I changed the temperature and the pure color levels. I cannot fix the color mismatches I mentioned in point #5 above. In the hypercon color picker, the LED colors match. When I use the grabber, the colors do not match. The colors are getting messed by the UTV007.

    So close, yet so far.

    "frameDecimation" : 4
    did not help
I tried PAL and couldnt even get a screenshot.
I tried manually inputting PAL and NTSC resolutions, and also I tried reducing them by half.
    Nothing is working.
I verified the video source looks good from the hdmi2av.
Please see the attachment, I am still getting a black and white image with horizontal lines on it.

Is anyone successful with the STK1160 and the latest OSMC and latest hyperion and latest hypercon?
With wips everything is ok except for some random flashes between 2 sec - 6 mins.

Wish I would have known about this grabber a long time ago, I have been sitting with a broken ambilight since Oct 2015. I just put in the IP and ran the app, and my LEDs turned on! Wow this is incredible.

I use a tv as my monitor and watch tv/movies in media center. win7 64bit, 1080p
I havent found any demo videos to run yet, but I just wanted to report my excitement :)

I did notice a problem though, kind of a big deal to me, when I play anything in windows media center the LEDs all go black. So close, but so far.
VLC, and windows media player both work with the windows grabber but I need media center for all the delicious features such as commercial auto skip, 2 week epg, etc. I am guessing it is a video overlay issue of some sort. Is there anything I can put in the config to make media center video get sent to hyperion?

HalbesHaehnchen I saw your screenshots and STK1160 does look the best but I havent been able to get consistent results. The picture usually loses color and reduces to black and white. So my ambilight clone works, but not in color. Also, there are flickering random color horizontal lines that make the LEDs flash, so it make my ambilight useless. Sometimes it works in color but again, the color flickering from the horizontal random color lines is almost constant and annoying.

What is your setup, HalbesHaehnchen? I put mine in my signature: Rpi2, STK1160, latest OSMC, and latest hyperion. Maybe OSMC is the problem?

TPmodding has informed me that the Fushicai USBTV007 usb video capture device is the best choice. I am on my second STK1160 device using OSMC on a raspberry pi2 and it just is not stable. Note: It is necessary to use external power and a USB hub. I can surely say that you should not use the STK1160 with the pi2 at this point.

If you have a stable ambilight grabber setup, please post which grabber you have and more importantly, a link where you purchased it.

I have just purchased this "Easier Cap" for $10 http://www.aliexpress.com/item…mm-video/32648776826.html

There is a cheaper one that may ship slower for $7 here: http://www.aliexpress.com/item…V-Easier/32649108992.html

I have been trying to get hyperion working with an external tv source since Oct 2015. Almost 1 year and I think I have tried every possible configuration option.

    The good:
Hyperion and the LEDs work fine with Kodi and also with hyperion remote effects.

    The bad:
The problem is with getting a good capture, because the LEDs only output black and white, flickering horizontal colored lines, or both.

I use a usb hub with power supply to power the stk1160 grabber to eliminate power issues. I have set my HDMI2AV to PAL and NTSC many times, and changed the hyperion config file to NTSC and PAL many times.

    Clues:
    1. When I connect the AV output from the HDMI2AV, I can see that sometimes the picture is black and white, sometimes it has color but there are horizontal colored lines (looks something like interlacing with wrong frame rate), and sometimes the picture looks good.
    2. When I try to take a screenshot using SSH, the resolution I input (width, height) is never respected. The resolution is predetermined by the NTSC or PAL setting in the config file ONLY. The width and height options do nothing.
    3. The resolution programmed into Hyperion for PAL mode seems to be wrong (360x192). PAL at full res is 720x576 and built into Hyperion I believe it should be captured at 360x288. However, Hyperion forces 360x192 and there is no way to change it.

    4. I can reset the video when HDMI2AV is outputing the black and white, or video with colored lines by reinserting the power and the hdmi cable. The HDMI2AV can work properly in both NTSC and PAL mode, if there really is a difference when I switch between NTSC and PAL I havent seen it.

Here is a sample of the "interlacing" issue which flickers my LEDs.
