Alexa support

  • Hey guys!

    Was wondering if there is a way to add Alexa support/control to Hyperion classic to start stop it.

    So I currently have my PI plugged into a smart socket that has Alexa support.
    I can start and stop Hyperion by voice control currently but what it does is an actual power cycle on/off of the raspberry pi. Should I be concerned as to to durability of the pi in the long haul ?

    Happy geeking

  • The main concern for me would be the durability of the SD card. I had many cards corrupted by pulling the power on my Pi.

    If you have a good quality one or the quality of SD cards has improved in general since my experience then this may not be an issue for you.

    To defend against this, it is possible to setup your operating system to be mounted as read-only. So once you get your hyperion settings tuned in exactly how you want, you can set things as read-only and there will be less of a chance of corrupting the SD card.

    Here is an example of how to do that: https://medium.com/@andreas.sc…bian-stretch-80c0f7be7353

  • or instead of the voice control to toggle the socket state you could setup a script on the pi that that would issue the shutdown command, Is it only Alexa you are using or do you use Home Assistant or anything similar?

    i used this>> https://howchoo.com/g/mwnlytk3…tton-to-your-raspberry-pi
    now with the click of a button to a relay i can safely pull up (GPIO3) to GND, which put the Raspi into a sleeping state..

    after this i turn the mainpower off Raspi, also with a relay.
    starting up the Raspi the next time is just applying power, maybe that gives you a idea.

    you can also edit the config.txt file to achieve the same, https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=217442

    its quite the same.

    the weirdest thing is that most standard PI is delivered with a switch on the power cord! go figure :facepalm:

    second weirdest thing that i never had ANY problems with a NOT formatted Samsung SD card in both of my Pi's, i turned them on and off with main power ( switch) and never had any problems for more than 2 years.

    :cautios::whistle:
