i did get the APA20 LEDs so it has the 4 wires. I had no idea that the data signal would be 5v as well, so it sounds like getting a level shifter is probably a good idea just to make sure everyhting is running smoothly. thanks for the diagrams and the advice

so the level shifter is only needed if i power it all off the single large PSU? i already have a wall wart that i got for the pi. if i use two supplies, i just hook the 2 LED power channels too the large PSU, and the two data channels to the GPIO pins? does it matter which GPIO pins i connect too? (obviously not the power and ground ones)

I'm a little confused about how i should be wiring up the Pi and the LEDs. i purchased a 5v 30a power supply, should i use this to power everything, or is it bettwe to use this to only drive the LEDs, and use the regular miniusb power supply for the pi. If i use the 5v supply to run everything, do i need a level shifter?

i just ordered some apa 20 LEDs that took 10 days to arrive from china to the US. they aren't the same as the WS2812s, but those can also be found for very cheap too.

did you just strip the cord to expose the wires and plug it in?

Your link is unique to your browser. I would remove it and find the generic page that everyone sees.
However, If the supply is just shown as a shiny metal box with a screw block. Then yes you well need a cord.
yeah, that's exactly what it is. any cord will work? -
I just ordered one of these to drive my LEDs, and i am wondering if it comes with a cord to plug into the wall, or if i need to get one and wire it in?

What kind of powersupply are you using for the LEDs? is is separate form the power supply for your raspi?

I'm thinking about getting a RaspberryPi3 to run Hyperion for my 65" TV. I am a little bit confused by the different type of LED strips available and want to make sure i get the right ind for this project. Are these the ones that i want? what kind of power supply would i need to run these lights and the Pi?
Thanks,
