Can 5050 leds be used for monochromatic illumination?

I would like to illuminate a marquee placed above the screen with just one color each time.
Is it possible to configure hyperion in such a way to pick a certain color from a specified part of the screen and illuminate the lightbox /marquee accordingly? As if I had a light strip with only one led.

no. normal 5050 leds are not addressable.
    only addressable led are supported.

If I use then normal ws2811 leds, can I have them all display the same color to provide the effect I described?

Hyperion DOES support normal leds using piblaster.
    https://github.com/sarfata/pi-blaster

You'll need a 3 channel mosfet driver to interface to a raspberry Pi and you'll also need to install piblaster.

Once done and working you can get Hyperion to define 1 logical led based on screen co-ordinated and and tell it which gpio pins piblaster is using.

Having said that, f you haven't bought the leds yet - get an addressable strip instead. The setup is easier
