WS2812B 12V RPI 3b

  • Hello,

    I am desperately trying to get this to work. Before I continue searching a question about my hardware config.

    I have an RPI 3b+, a WS2812B 12V and the appropriate power supplies.

    Connected as follows: GND bridged between WS2812B and RPi, 12V to the stripe, control line to GPIO18.

    LEDs always light white, with and without RPI. Can this work at all like this? Other projects have this HW setup, I'm not sure anymore. For me it does nothing at all.

    Software is Libreelec and Hyperion NG

    Thanks and greetings

    Christian

  • The pi and those leds are both 5v systems. Running a 12v power will fry both. You can use a buck convertor to lower the voltage down to the appropriate 5v.

  • The LED stripe is a 12V strip. The seller told me it is a 2812B but maybe it is another one. Anyway i have free others of them and they are working with a SP107E 12V and everything is fine.

    The 12V+ wire is only connected to the strip, not to the PI.

    Only GND is bridged. The curious thing is that i have no voltage on GPIO 18. I did a test with Raspberry tools and basically it is working. With hyperion ng i always have 0V.

    I have this two entries in config.txt but it didn't help:

    dtparam=spi=on

    dtparam=audio=off

    The first one is from hyperion ng installation the second one from me

    Is there anything else what i need to change?

  • Big progress: input from the wrong side.

    Now I wired power from both sides and the signal from the other side. I did not realize the arrow on the strip

    Now i have some problems with flickering. Has here someone a hint for me?
