WS2801 needs strong color adjustments

  • Hi guys!

I just followed the color calibration guide yesterday and was wondering if it is "normal" that I need to adjust for example the whitelevel values that much?

    My whitelevel goes R 255 G 83 B 35 to get a normal white.
Also my LED stripe should be BGR as product info says but I need to set to RBG.

Is this quite normal or is there something wrong with my stripe??

  • I had to set the RGB to 255 66 40 to get good white level and all colors nearly perfect. (But it's also a matter of what color (warm, cold, ...) you choose on your TV)
Problem is, that with such a big correction the dynamic range is very limited. But I think it is a problem with the poor LED stripes. I had choosen the cheapest on aliexpress...
Maybe some others can write down the correction calues of their RGB stripes and write where they bought them to find out a good stripe for a god price that works well for us?!

  • Very weird values. But i have been seen often that bad values with ws2801.
My apa102 show a bright could white at 255 255 255, this is what you expect at these values. Looks like ws2801 may not that great.

  • So I am not the only one with that... hmm...
I took the guide from powerpi.de and the suggested 5m LED strip from Hello Fish. I also contacted the manufacturer now to see what he will say.
Have the feeling also, that theres a "lack of color bandwidth" but thats maybe because of changed other settings.

    EDIT:
Can this be because of the other components in my setup like HDMI2AV converter or so? Not really right?

  • Mine is the same. I found it very difficult to get a white and yellow. Had to do a LOT of adjusting to the white levels, gamma and temperature.

Thinking about replacing my WS2801 with APA102.

  • I had the same Problem with my ws2801.
    255 170 120
Then i changed to the Apa and now with
    255 255 255 White is White!

  • I think it's time to do the same ^^

may you guys make a bulk order and can save some money...if you want, i can give you a email adress from a chinese seller

  • I always thought that there are only a few LED-Chip manufacturer and ws2801 or APA102 is only a matter of connectivity or the controller. But as it seems the ws2801 strips are very poor quality, or they really put the wrong resistor between chip and controller. Normally each color needs another resistor because of the different forward voltage... Or they connected the wrong resistors to the wrong color.
    Well, it was very cheap...
@TPmodding Please give us a link to the chinese seller, so that we all can be sure to get the perfect strip ;)
